Charlotte returned to Bucks to speak to students studying a range of social science subjects about career opportunities and how her degree benefited her in developing skills for the workplace.

Charlotte said she carried out work experience with the firm Carrington Solicitors and contacts there informed her of a vacancy with Pickup and Scott Solicitors. This in turn led to a job she started a day after graduating.

Charlotte’s job involves attending prisons to assist with a range of prison law matters, providing assistance with parole board reviews, parole board oral hearings, recall, adjudications, sentence calculations, categorisation and sentence planning.

She said: “I enjoyed so many opportunities through studying at Bucks New University and cannot speak highly enough of the need to complement your studies by gaining work experience.

“Work experience allows you to build your range of skills, adapt to a working environment, network and create opportunities. Without it I wouldn’t be in the job I am now.

“Even if you write to ten companies and only receive one reply back it is worth carrying out that experience and having that something extra on your CV. It is what could help you stand out from the next candidate.

“Employers will see many students with a first or a 2:1 but you can bring that something extra if you show you have been pro-active and done something outside the classroom.”

Dr Pat Mahon-Daly, Principal Lecturer in Social Sciences, said: “Charlotte is an exemplary example of how soon a graduate can use skills learned at university and enter into graduate level work.”
