Read how a Bucks graduate brings a fresh perspective to making change; through her coaching career, business, charitable work and publications.
What is involved in your day-to-day work?
I help leaders bring people with them through change – organisational change and individual change. I do this through coaching (one-to-one coaching, peer group coaching and team coaching) and training. My training covers things like People and Change, Boosting your Resilience and Leading Change.
What have been your main career achievements to date?
I have been developing and coaching leaders of organisations for over 16 years through my own business. Most of my career highs come from seeing my clients achieve more and live more fulfilling lives.
In 2009 I published my book about resolving common leadership dilemmas – it’s called “Are you a Badger or a Doormat? How to be a leader who gets results”. It was great to see people buying it and hearing their positive reactions.
In that year I also became a Trustee for the charity Careers Springboard Gerrards Cross – we help unemployed professionals, managers and graduates with effective job search.
Since completing my MAPP, I was delighted to be invited to become a Visiting Research Fellow at Bucks New University.
How has your qualification from Bucks helped your career?
The MAPP has given me a sound, research-based understanding of how positive psychology can help people be more successful, perform better and enjoy their work/roles more. These concepts and practical techniques have greatly enriched my coaching and training.
I have also developed new courses to boost people’s resilience and well-being. These are being well-received in organisations and through the open courses I run regularly.
Overall the qualification has broadened my horizons and also given me a specialism as a coach which differentiates me in a crowded market.
During my time at Bucks I developed a wide range of excellent tools that help me live my own life with greater resilience and well-being. I also gained completely new areas of knowledge that help my clients be more successful.
I am now a more confident speaker, and regularly present on positive psychology topics to groups of people such as professional bodies.
What advice would you give to a student who is about to graduate into your role/industry?
I’d strongly recommend doing a MAPP course as it gives you excellent understanding and skills for helping people to flourish.
Are there any misconceptions about your role/industry that you would like to address?
Many people in HR and Coaching think Positive Psychology is all about strengths-based work. While this is very important, it is only one part of a very rich subject. The work on resilience, well-being, creating a growth mindset and living a happy, fulfilling life are very helpful when working with a broad range of people.
What advice would you pass on to your first year self?
Reach out to people in the areas of research that interest you. Most of them are interested to link up.
Please tell us anything else about you, your time at Bucks, your industry or role that will be of interest.
My original MSc research was about lifting the resilience and well-being of unemployed people attending the Executive Job Club charity Careers Springboard. We saw very real positive change in people during this first programme and I now run three open programmes a year. Bucks New University support these programmes which help unemployed people in Bucks and Berks maintain their resilience and well-being while job seeking. We have so far helped over 70 people.
