Read a student’s perspective of the benefits of Bucks Mentoring, as Rafaela describes how the programme, and Mentor Mark Harris, helped her during her final year.
Name: Rafaela Bartley.
Studying: BA (Hons) Business and Human Resource Management.
Year: 3rd year student, graduating in 2016.
Contact Details: LinkedIn Profile.
Mentor: to a first year student on our BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance course.
Mentee: to an entrepreneurial business manager who has generously worked along side our students in many different ways for several years.
What have you learnt through having a Mentor?
Having a mentor allowed me to develop skills that I would not have had the opportunity to focus on during my final year. As well as focusing on my academic capabilities through assignments and exams, I was able to enhance my interpersonal skills through the mentoring program. I particularly focused on presentation, negotiation and persuasion skills, and they helped me to demonstrate confidence within the recruitment processes of graduate schemes I applied for.
Through the mentoring program I also became more aware of my communication style and became conscious of areas of improvement. The meetings provided opportunities to practice those skills, including mock presentations within a controlled environment.
Would you recommend other students join the programme?
This is a fantastic opportunity for those seeking to be in control of their own development. I found it really motivating knowing that I had someone there to support me, and provide guidance before I took the next steps into seeking employment.
Since there is a variety of mentors available with a different range of expertise and experiences the mentoring scheme is also suitable for those seeking to improve on general aspects of Uni such as coursework.
The careers team is also really approachable, and Robert Coldwell is always available if you have any concerns or just want advice on how to get the most out of this experience.
What career opportunities are you seeking?
I am seeking Business and HR graduate opportunities in a large or global organisation. I would love to secure a project based graduate scheme where I can maximise the opportunities for development and experience different business areas. I have undertaken a project for Dow Chemical last summer (read more about that here) and enjoyed the responsibilities of having my own project alongside participating and collaborating with other business activities.
Do you have a message for your Mentor?
I would like to thank my mentor for dedicating his time and for taking part in the mentoring experience at Bucks. It was great to hear your experiences and more of your successful background. You have certainly helped me with my confidence as I embark on the job application processes. I will remember our sessions on presentation and communication skills as I start my career and face the situations we have anticipated. I also valued your coaching skills where I was able to reflect on my current performance and become more conscious of my strengths, skills and capabilities. Thank you!
Mentor Mark Harris has written the following about Rafaela
It’s been both a delight and very challenging to work with Rafaela.
A delight because she knows what she wants from a mentor, which makes my role easier, because she responds well to my thoughts and guidance, but is not afraid to challenge me and because she’s a bright intelligent young lady who I am sure will go far.
It’s been very challenging because she has such high standards! For me to help someone improve an area on which they wish to work from say 3/10 to 7/10 is achievable. With Rafaela we have worked mainly on areas where she already scored 7 or 8/10 but that’s not good enough – she wants to be a 10. That’s a challenge for me!
I’m really pleased to read Rafaela’s comments – to know that she thinks I’ve done a worthwhile job means a lot to me.
A message from Bucks New University Alumni & Mentoring Service:
Thank you Rafaela for taking the time to endorse the mentoring programme, we are so glad to have worked alongside you during the 2015-16 academic year. As well as committing so impressively to having a mentor, your willingness to voluntarily help a 1st year during such a busy period clearly demonstrates what a dedicated individual you are. We wish you all the best throughout what will no doubt be a highly successful career.
Naturally, we also need to thank Mark Harris, who has volunteered to be a part of the Mentoring Programme for several years now. As well as being incredibly knowledgeable he is such a perfect role model, and many of our students, graduates and staff owe him more than can be successfully acknowledge here.
