Why did you choose Bucks New University to study this course?
I did not know what an ODP was, it was only when I was talking to a colleague at a private hospital I was working at as a phlebotomist and expressing an interest in wanting to work in theatres that I was told about the role of an ODP, so I attended an open day the next day and was impressed by the facilities and felt really welcomed by the lecturers, they were passionate and enthusiastic. I walked out of there knowing it was the uni and career for me!
What are your fondest memories/What was the best thing about studying this course?
Having such a brilliant support network of other students at my hospital and the lecturers.
The turning point when I realised that I wanted to go into paediatrics is a moment I will remember. A child deteriorated on induction of anaesthesia, and the way I dealt with the situation and the feedback I received made me feel proud and gave me belief in myself to have a career in paediatrics.
Where were your placements? What positive experiences/learning did you take away?
My placements were at Wexham Park, Slough. I spent time in anaesthetics, scrub and recovery. My mentor was incredible, she taught me everything and helped my build my confidence and develop as a practitioner.
What are your plans/the next steps after graduating?
I have a job in London in a children’s hospital, rotating around specialities. Eventually I would like to side step into child protection alongside my role as an ODP.
Any other comments you would like to make about your time spent at Bucks New University?
Thank you to the ODP team of lecturers, they have been amazing and I am glad that I chose Bucks New Uni to study to become an ODP!
